After reading “Patria,” a book that captivated me, I felt the need to continue exploring the works of its talented author, Fernando Aramburu, despite having many books on my to-read list. “Patria” fascinated me, and “Los peces de la amargura” (The Fish of Bitterness), published by Tusquets Editores, does not disappoint. Aramburu's writing is splendid, as can be seen in “Los peces de la amargura.” This exceptional author is highly recommended for those interested in learning more about ETA and the period of armed, social, and political crisis that marked recent Spanish history. Unfortunately, due to a lack of time, I had postponed reading this outstanding novel. Although “Patria” exceeds 600 pages, “Los peces de la amargura” is perfect for those with limited time but still interested in the subject.

Born in San Sebastián, Spain, in 1959, Fernando Aramburu has established himself as a prominent Spanish author, earning multiple awards for his works, including the prestigious Premio Nacional de Narrativa. In just over 200 pages, Aramburu presents a novel in “Los peces de la amargura” that contains a series of short stories related to the armed conflict. Each one narrates the story of a family affected by terrorism, a violence that left losses, pain, aftereffects, and persistent bitterness. Each story offers a different perspective, but all share sadness and misfortune. In my opinion, they leave a necessary bitter touch.

Although ETA announced the definitive cessation of armed activity in 2011, ending 43 years of terror, it is difficult to erase the traces it left. It is likely that, like me, readers of my generation have vague memories of those events. “Los peces de la amargura” and other novels by Aramburu on the conflict serve as an invitation to investigate and reflect on the subject and to participate in political debates. In summary, I thoroughly enjoyed the novel. The narrative, style, and stories presented by the author are excellent. All left a feeling of sadness in me, but they are truly worthwhile. Soon, I will write a review of “Años lentos” (Slow Years), another wonderful novel by Aramburu, and I will undoubtedly continue exploring his works.

Después de leer “Patria”, un libro que me cautivó, sentí la necesidad de seguir explorando las obras de su talentoso autor, Fernando Aramburu, a pesar de tener muchos libros en mi lista de pendientes. “Patria” me fascinó y “Los peces de la amargura”, publicado por Tusquets Editores, no decepciona. La escritura de Aramburu es espléndida, como se puede apreciar en “Los peces de la amargura”. Este excepcional autor es muy recomendable para aquellos interesados en conocer más sobre ETA y el período de crisis armada, social y política que marcó la historia reciente de España. Desafortunadamente, debido a la falta de tiempo, había pospuesto la lectura de esta destacada novela. Aunque “Patria” supera las 600 páginas, “Los peces de la amargura” es perfecto para aquellos con tiempo limitado pero aún interesados en el tema.

Es probable que, como yo, los lectores de mi generación tengan recuerdos vagos de aquellos eventos. “Los peces de la amargura” y otras novelas de Aramburu sobre el conflicto sirven como una invitación para investigar y reflexionar sobre el tema y participar en debates políticos. En resumen, disfruté muchísimo de la novela. La narrativa, el estilo y las historias presentadas por el autor son excelentes. Todas dejaron un sentimiento de tristeza en mí, pero realmente valen la pena. Pronto, escribiré una reseña de “Años lentos”, otra maravillosa novela de Aramburu, y sin duda continuaré explorando sus obras.
