Kell, un Antari con el singular don de viajar entre estos Londres, es el hijo adoptivo del Rey y la Reina del Londres Rojo y sirve a su imperio. Mientras Kell realiza sus viajes oficiales entre estos mundos, ocasionalmente se involucra en contrabando, actividad que pronto lo sumerge en peligros imprevistos. En uno de esos viajes conoce a Lila Bard, una ladrona del Londres Gris. A pesar de su encuentro inicialmente tenso, Lila podría ser la aliada que Kell necesita para restablecer el equilibrio entre los Londres. Although many view Black London as merely a legend, its stories are deeply intertwined with the essence of the other Londons. Kell, an Antari with the unique gift of traveling between these Londons, is the adopted son of the King and Queen of Red London and serves their empire. While Kell embarks on his official journeys between these worlds, he occasionally engages in smuggling, an endeavor that soon immerses him in unexpected dangers. On one such journey, he meets Lila Bard, a thief from Grey London. Despite their initially tense encounter, Lila might just be the ally Kell requires to restore balance among the Londons. Their adventure underscores the crucial importance of maintaining harmony among these four worlds.

For those who follow my reviews, Victoria Schwab is no stranger. Her unmistakable writing style, marked by a contemplative narrative that slowly introduces readers to her universe and characters, has always captivated me. “A Darker Shade of Magic” is a prime example. At first, the storytelling might seem unhurried as Schwab intricately details the atmosphere of each London and its denizens. However, once the setting is firmly established, the story propels forward with relentless energy, taking the reader on a journey without pauses or distractions. The characters, both protagonists and antagonists, are masterfully crafted. From the sinister Dane Twins of White London to Holland, another Antari whose motives are shrouded in mystery, Schwab's ensemble is alluring and memorable.

Lila Bard stands out with her vibrant spirit and audacity, making her a reader favorite. Although only hints of her past are revealed, the potential depth of her backstory is tantalizing, setting up anticipation for future developments in the series. Kell, our main lens into the various Londons, is a character of depth and nobility. His close bond with his brother Rhy, a charismatic figure with much to unveil, is touching. This novel showcases Schwab's narrative prowess. Her conception of magic is smooth and graspable, and the plot is consistently riveting. The world she's crafted is shadowy and mesmerizing, an ideal backdrop for a dark fantasy. The events in the novel bear genuine consequences; actions have ramifications, some heart-wrenchingly real. While certain sections were challenging for me to read due to my attachment to the characters, I appreciate Schwab's raw honesty in her storytelling. In conclusion, “A Darker Shade of Magic” is an outstanding introduction to a series that promises to be entrancing, and I eagerly await the upcoming installments.
