I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, especially after my recent streak of bad luck with books. Although I was unfamiliar with the author Zen Cho, I had been meaning to read her work for some time, and I was not disappointed. Her writing style is engaging and immersive, and I look forward to reading more of her work in the future. One of the standout features of the book is its setting in Malaysia. Cho does an excellent job of describing the sights, people, and culture of the region, making the reader feel as though they are truly there. The blend of urban fantasy with Malaysian folklore, featuring gods and ghosts that only certain people can see, adds an extra layer of intrigue to the story.

While the book is action-packed and there is never a dull moment, there are some instances where the pace slows down a bit. While I appreciated the complexity of the multiple storylines, I felt that some were given too much emphasis at the expense of others. This caused some plot points to lack the necessary depth to truly resonate with the reader. One particular storyline that fell short was Jess' relationship with her girlfriend. While the idea of a character struggling to come out to their parents is certainly relevant and important, the girlfriend character herself lacked depth, making it difficult to root for them as a couple. Additionally, certain elements of the story related to this plot point remained unresolved, which left me feeling unsatisfied.

Despite these shortcomings, the book features some incredibly well-written characters, particularly Jess' grandmother and mother, who provide much-needed levity to the story's darker moments. However, readers should be aware that the book contains violent and triggering content, including attempted rape. Ultimately, the book is a compelling mix of ghost story and family mystery, with some twists that caught me off guard. While it has its flaws, I would still recommend it to fans of urban fantasy, particularly those looking for a unique setting beyond the typical American or British locales. Overall, I'm glad I read it and look forward to exploring more of Cho's work in the future.

Disfruté mucho leyendo este libro, especialmente después de mi racha de mala suerte con los libros. Aunque no estaba familiarizado con la autora Zen Cho, había estado pensando en leer su trabajo por un tiempo, y no me decepcionó. Su estilo de escritura es atractivo y envolvente, y espero leer más de su trabajo en el futuro. Una de las características destacadas del libro es su escenario en Malasia.
