He tenido el placer de leer “La Armada Invencible”, publicada por Seix Barral, una novela que magistralmente entrelaza comedia, nostalgia y una ferviente pasión por la música metal. El autor, Antonio Ortuño, se distingue por su habilidad para plasmar la realidad cotidiana de México, un talento ya evidente en su obra “Olinka”, donde trata temas como la corrupción y la gentrificación. No obstante, en “La Armada Invencible”, se adentra en el terreno de los sueños juveniles y los deseos reprimidos. La trama gira en torno a una banda de metal que, en su época juvenil, no alcanzó la fama esperada y, en su etapa de cuarentena, intenta redescubrir y revivir esos momentos de gloria.

El protagonista, Barry Dávila, un hombre de cuarenta años que mantiene su estilo de metalero ochentero, inicia una cruzada para reunir a los antiguos miembros de “La Armada Invencible”. La historia nos lleva a través de las vidas de estos músicos, quienes en su juventud fueron considerados promesas y que ahora se enfrentan a una realidad marcada por las decisiones del pasado y una sensación de fracaso. La novela se zambulle en las biografías entrecruzadas de esta fraternidad de músicos, desplegando una narrativa cargada de humor e irreverencia.

I have had the pleasure of reading “La Armada Invencible,” published by Seix Barral, a novel that masterfully intertwines comedy, nostalgia, and a fervent passion for metal music. The author, Antonio Ortuño, stands out for his ability to capture the everyday reality of Mexico, a talent already evident in his work “Olinka,” where he addresses themes such as corruption and gentrification. However, in “La Armada Invencible,” he delves into the realm of youthful dreams and repressed desires. The plot revolves around a metal band that, in its youth, did not achieve the expected fame and, in its quarantine phase, tries to rediscover and relive those moments of glory.

The protagonist, Barry Dávila, a forty-year-old man who maintains his eighties metalhead style, embarks on a crusade to reunite the former members of “La Armada Invencible.” The story takes us through the lives of these musicians, who were considered promising in their youth but now face a reality marked by past decisions and a sense of failure.
