Many people will have been introduced to the Battle of Stalingrad from various angles, but my school experience was not one of them. Some might have come to know it through the movie “Enemy at the Gates” or the fictional novel “War of the Rats,” which narrates the snipers' fight in the city. Others will remember it as one of the levels in the successful Soviet campaign in the game “Call of Duty,” capturing quite a bit about the winter war. This same battle has now been deeply explored by the historian and writer Iain MacGregor in his recent work published in Spain with the editorial house Ático de los Libros: “The Lighthouse of Stalingrad. The Hidden Truth in the Heart of the Greatest Battle of World War II.” In this meticulously researched book, the London-based historian reconstructs everything known about one of the most iconic and recognized sites of the Battle of Stalingrad: Pavlov's House. According to the version of history presented by the USSR and later Russia, a true feat occurred there: a small group of Soviet soldiers defended the building and square, repeatedly repelling the German tanks and infantry, all while enduring aerial bombardments. There is no doubt that this epic battle was as significant, if not more so, than any other in World War II, and its legacy endures even today. This book reveals new information that highlights the Soviet sacrifice and, ironically, reminds the reader how despots from all quarters can harm or even destroy a nation. It is, without a doubt, a worthy read.
