Hoy quiero presentarles una obra literaria profundamente conmovedora y emocionante: “Lo innombrable”, de Jess Lourey, publicada por la editorial Crossbooks. La protagonista, Cassie McDowell, es una niña de doce años que reside en la rural Minnesota de la década de 1980. Sus padres, aunque hippies y cultos, viven en la pobreza, y junto a su hermana mayor experimentan una vida llena de contrastes. En su entorno se están produciendo sucesos atroces, tanto en su hogar como en su comunidad. Cassie teme que su padre suba las escaleras hacia su habitación por la noche, una situación que intenta evitar escribiendo en su diario. Además, ella y los vecinos están preocupados porque varios niños desaparecen y, tras ser hallados, se descubre que han sido abusados por un hombre enmascarado. A pesar de los incesantes rumores, se toman pocas medidas al respecto, pues los afectados provienen de la parte más humilde del pueblo. Sin embargo, la situación se agrava cuando un niño de una zona acomodada desaparece.

La vida en el hogar de Cassie tampoco es mucho mejor. Sus padres organizan fiestas desenfrenadas sin ocultarlas a sus hijas. Ambas son advertidas de no hablar de lo que sucede en casa, pues otros no lo “entenderían”. Cassie, creativa e inteligente, vive una pesadilla sin poder buscar ayuda. Decide investigar quién secuestra y abusa de sus compañeros de escuela, temiendo que estos crímenes estén más cerca de lo que imagina. El volátil humor de su padre domina la casa, donde abundan los secretos, incluyendo lo que sucede en su sótano de tierra.

Aunque podría considerarse una historia de iniciación, “Lo innombrable” es, sin lugar a dudas, un thriller cargado de tensión. Cassie vive con miedo al monstruo que acecha en las escaleras y al que secuestra a los niños. Su madre no pone fin a los horrores del hogar y, de hecho, los ignora. La hermana de Cassie enfrenta la situación de manera disfuncional. Resulta imposible no empatizar con todos los niños involucrados, incluso aquellos que se vuelven violentos, ya que están atrapados en un mundo donde el estatus social prevalece sobre la investigación de crímenes verdaderos.

Today, I want to introduce you to a deeply moving and thrilling literary work: “The Unnamable” by Jess Lourey, published by Crossbooks. The protagonist, Cassie McDowell, is a twelve-year-old girl living in rural Minnesota in the 1980s. Her parents, although hippies and educated, live in poverty, and together with her older sister, they experience a life full of contrasts. Atrocities are happening in both their home and community. Cassie fears that her father will come up the stairs to her room at night, a situation she tries to avoid by writing in her diary. In addition, she and her neighbors are worried because several children disappear and, once found, it is discovered that they have been abused by a masked man. Despite the incessant rumors, little is being done about it, as the affected children come from the poorest part of town. However, the situation worsens when a child from a wealthier area goes missing.

Life at Cassie's home is not much better. Her parents throw wild parties without hiding them from their daughters. Both girls are warned not to talk about what happens at home, as others would not “understand.” Cassie, creative and intelligent, lives a nightmare without being able to seek help. She decides to investigate who is kidnapping and abusing her schoolmates, fearing that these crimes might be closer than she imagines. Her father's volatile mood dominates the house, where secrets abound, including what happens in their dirt basement.

Although it could be considered a coming-of-age story, “The Unnamable” is, without a doubt, a tension-filled thriller. Cassie lives in fear of the monster lurking on the stairs and the one kidnapping the children. Her mother does not put an end to the horrors at home and, in fact, ignores them. Cassie's sister faces the situation in a dysfunctional manner. It is impossible not to empathize with all the children involved, even those who become violent, as they are trapped in a world where social status prevails over the investigation of real crimes.
