This book had truly delved deep into the protagonist's soul and my own, leaving me with that beloved but painful feeling of a punch in the stomach that overturns and annihilates you. I couldn't help but love it, even though I was left without words. The author, Giulia Caminito, is young and incredibly talented, and she makes it clear that this book is not a biography, nor an autobiography, nor an autofiction. It's a story that has swallowed fragments of many lives to create a narration that tells the story of her upbringing, the pains that she has circumnavigated and those that she has crossed.

The main fragment of life that this book focuses on is that of Gaia, a stubborn and proud girl who grew up in a difficult but proud family in a working-class house near Lake Bracciano. Gaia hides within herself a harshness, a wild spirit that leads her to react with unpredictable violence to the cynicism and banalities of the reality that surrounds her. Despite this, she is a very strong female figure who kicks, screams, and bites her way out of the degrading picture that determinism has placed her in. There is also Antonia, Gaia's mother, who opens the story. Antonia is a woman who has not been fortunate in life, and she wants to teach her daughter to look ahead and count only on herself, without compromising. In my opinion, the red color of the hair that mother and daughter share is a symbol of the fire that animates them, the torment that never gives them respite, and the silent scream they would like to launch to the world and its injustices.

Throughout most of the novel, I found myself thinking that this book was similar to “Un'amicizia” by Silvia Avallone. However, I soon realized that this book is much harsher. It's filled with anger, an inability to govern one's feelings, and a deep sadness that is always present. Unlike “Un'amicizia,” where the circle of the unsaid and the undone closed at the end, Gaia seems to surround the muddy waters of Lake Bracciano and look back, remaining suspended in the whirlpools of her past pains. I was left feeling helpless and excited, but not entirely reconciled with myself as a reader who had come to terms with the protagonist's torments. In the end, this book is a powerful explosion that leaves a lasting impact on the reader.

Este libro ha profundizado verdaderamente en el alma de la protagonista y en la mía, dejándome con esa querida pero dolorosa sensación de un puñetazo en el estómago que te trastorna y aniquila. No pude evitar amarlo, aunque me quedé sin palabras. La autora, Giulia Caminito, es joven e increíblemente talentosa, y deja claro que este libro no es una biografía, ni una autobiografía, ni una autoficción. Es una historia que ha tragado fragmentos de muchas vidas para crear una narración que cuenta la historia de su crianza, los dolores que ha circunnavegado y aquellos que ha cruzado.

El principal fragmento de vida en el que se enfoca este libro es el de Gaia, una chica obstinada y orgullosa que creció en una familia difícil pero orgullosa en una casa de clase trabajadora cerca del lago de Bracciano. Gaia esconde en su interior una dureza, un espíritu salvaje que la lleva a reaccionar con violencia impredecible al cinismo y a las banalidades de la realidad que la rodea. A pesar de esto, ella es una figura femenina muy fuerte que se abre camino a patadas, gritos y mordiscos para salir de la imagen degradante en la que el determinismo la ha colocado. También está Antonia, la madre de Gaia, que abre la historia. Antonia es una mujer que no ha tenido suerte en la vida y quiere enseñar a su hija a mirar hacia adelante y contar solo con ella misma, sin comprometerse. En mi opinión, el color rojo del cabello que comparten madre e hija es un símbolo del fuego que las anima, del tormento que nunca les da respiro y del grito silencioso que les gustaría lanzar al mundo y a sus injusticias.

A lo largo de la mayor parte de la novela, pensé que este libro era similar a “Un'amicizia” de Silvia Avallone. Sin embargo, pronto me di cuenta de que este libro es mucho más duro. Está lleno de rabia, una incapacidad para gobernar los sentimientos y una profunda tristeza que siempre está presente. A diferencia de “Un'amicizia”, donde el círculo de lo no dicho y lo no hecho se cerró al final, Gaia parece rodear las aguas turbias del lago de Bracciano y mirar hacia atrás, permaneciendo suspendida en los remolinos de sus dolores pasados. Me sentí indefensa y emocionada al mismo tiempo, pero no completamente reconciliada conmigo misma como lectora que había llegado a un acuerdo con los tormentos de la protagonista. al final, este libro es una explosión poderosa que deja un impacto duradero en el lector.
