He’d told me he loved me. What happened to all that? For the first time in a long while, it wasn’t just knee-jerk jealousy when I thought about him with another man. I felt empty. I wasn’t just afraid of losing my family. I was afraid of losing my everything.

It felt good to joke with him, laugh with him, be with him. A Kelly who wanted space made me anxious. There was a little embarrassment mixed in there too. Apparently my oldest friend was ready to move on from our clingy childhood ways, and I wasn’t.

I sighed inwardly. I was as delusional and optimistic as any Disney princess. It was going to look fantastic on my eHarmony profile. I’d use Snow White as my fucking avatar. She found seven men. Surely I could scrounge up one.

I wasn’t interested in having Kelly physically, but I wanted every part of his waking thoughts. And that was selfish as fuck.

Part of me thinks I could fall in love with you. The clock ticked some more. The other part of me knows I already have.
