Daniel Stashower ha recibido la beca Raymond Chandler Fulbright en literatura policiaca y ha sido lector en el Wadham College de Oxford. Colaborador de The New York Times, The Washington Post, Smithsonian Magazine, National Geographic Traveller y Connoisseur, es autor de la biografía Teller of Tales: The Life of Arthur Conan Doyle (1999), con la que ganó el premio Edgar, y de The Boy Genius and The Mogul (2002). También escribe novelas policiacas, como The Dine Museum Murders (1999) o Houdini y Sherlock Holmes (2001).
