SPANISH REVIEW Karen Russell y Jonathan Safran Foer son dos luminarias de la literatura contemporánea por quienes me vería haciendo cola hasta después de la medianoche solo para sumergirme en la tinta fresca de sus obras más recientes. Me refiero a la magia de sostener un libro en tus manos, un objeto físico donde sus palabras, ahora tangibles, esperan ser descubiertas. La prosa de Russell es un viaje en sí misma; densa y embriagadora, repleta de giros únicos y una belleza sombría que le ha merecido nominaciones al Pulitzer y una Beca Genius. Su escritura debe ser saboreada como un vino fino, viejo y raro: con una lenta reflexión que permite apreciar cada matiz. Escuchar su obra en audio, para mí, es como ser un espectador pasivo mientras otro disfruta de ese vino exquisito. Y leer su obra en Kindle, bueno, para mí no es una opción. De ahí que en esta reseña brinde un aplauso de pie a “Sleep Donation”, una nueva obra maestra de Russell, pero también deje constancia de mi desilusión con la decisión editorial de no proporcionar esta obra en el amado formato de papel impreso. He intentado ponerme en contacto con ellos, pero mis palabras se pierden en el vasto mar de consultas. Como ferviente seguidor de Russell, ansío ver “Sleep Donation” en mi estantería, junto a las obras palpables de mis autores favoritos. La estantería que adorna mi sala de estar, no la ubicada en la intangible nube. El universo de Russell es fascinante, y “Sleep Donation” no es una excepción. Imagina una distopía donde una epidemia de insomnio arrasa Estados Unidos, con personas incapaces de conciliar el sueño hasta el punto de la mortalidad. En este inquietante escenario, una organización sin fines de lucro, las Brigadas Duermevela, emerge con el noble propósito de recolectar horas de sueño donadas para aliviar a los más afectados. Pero en su labor de transfusiones de sueño, deben garantizar que estos sean puros, libres de pesadillas. La historia nos introduce a Trish Edgewater, una trabajadora diligente de las Brigadas, quien, impulsada por el doloroso relato de la muerte de su hermana, convence a las personas para que donen su sueño. También se menciona a una donante universal, cuyos detalles dejaré para que los descubras en tu lectura. Este mundo insomne que Russell ha creado me fascinó: la propagación del insomnio, el funcionamiento de las Brigadas, las donaciones… su imaginación demuestra un talento descomunal. Por todo ello, solo puedo expresar el deseo de tener “Sleep Donation” en mi estantería, para poder paladear cada detalle, cada frase, cada momento de este vino literario que es la prosa de Karen Russell, lenta y reflexivamente. I'm talking about the magic of holding a book in your hands, a physical object where their now tangible words await discovery. Russell's prose is a journey in itself; dense and intoxicating, filled with unique turns and a dark beauty that has earned her Pulitzer nominations and a Genius Grant. Her writing must be savored like a fine, old, and rare wine: with slow reflection that allows each nuance to be appreciated. Listening to her work in audio, for me, is like being a passive spectator while someone else enjoys that exquisite wine. And reading her work on Kindle, well, for me it is not an option. Hence, in this review, I give a standing ovation to “Sleep Donation”, a new masterpiece from Russell, but also express my disillusionment with the editorial decision to not provide this work in the beloved printed format. I've tried to get in touch with them, but my words are lost in the vast sea of inquiries. As an avid follower of Russell, I yearn to see “Sleep Donation” on my bookshelf, beside the tangible works of my favorite authors. The shelf that adorns my living room, not the one located in the intangible cloud. Russell's universe is fascinating, and “Sleep Donation” is no exception. It imagines a dystopia where an insomnia epidemic sweeps across the United States, with people unable to sleep to the point of mortality. In this unsettling scenario, a non-profit organization, the Sleep Donation Brigades, emerges with the noble purpose of collecting donated sleep hours to alleviate those most affected. But in their task of sleep transfusions, they must ensure that these are pure, free from nightmares. The story introduces us to Trish Edgewater, a diligent worker in the Brigades, who, driven by the painful narrative of her sister's death, persuades people to donate their sleep. There is also mention of a universal donor, the details of whom I will leave for you to discover in your reading. This sleepless world that Russell has created fascinated me: the spread of insomnia, the functioning of the Brigades, the donations… her imagination demonstrates an enormous talent. Moreover, the entire plot revolves around deep reflections on our current world and presents significant ethical dilemmas. Despite its short length, it is a novel that will make you think and appeal to your moral sense, showing how even the worst misfortunes can give rise to corruption.
