As an avid horror reader, I'm pleased to say that House of Small Shadows by Minotauro Publishing is the most terrifying book I've read in a long time. The novel takes place in a typical haunted house, with bizarre hosts and ghostly activities, standing out for the chilling atmosphere the author creates. The plot follows Catherine, a young antiques appraiser, sent to assess a sample of antique dolls from a collection that belonged to the late M.H. Mason. Catherine visits the Red House where the remainder of the collection is stored, inhabited by Mason's peculiar niece Edith. Despite the disturbing nature of the house and warnings from a mute maid, Catherine is eager to stay and complete the appraisals.

Catherine has been in therapy for much of her life, leading her to doubt herself and her emotions, making it easy for her to rationalize the chilling events occurring around her. Her “episodes,” in which she enters trance-like states, become more frequent the longer she stays in the house. The recent breakup with her long-term boyfriend triggers a relapse into depression, allowing the reader to forgive her for convincing herself that everything is just her imagination. The best character in the book is Edith, the eccentric elderly owner of the Red House, a mix between Miss Havisham from Great Expectations and Miranda Priestly from The Devil Wears Prada. Catherine's biggest mistake is assuming that Edith is just an innocent reclusive old lady.

The Red House itself is a macabre setting, providing insight into the disturbed mind of M.H. Mason, a talented taxidermist traumatized by his experiences in World War I. Mason and his sister became reclusive in the Red House, creating taxidermy displays and unsettling scenes with rats to re-enact their traumatic war memories. Catherine finds this particularly horrifying. Mason and his sister also conducted “cruelty plays” with several scary-looking dolls, which are not meant to be toys. Edith warns Catherine about them, but she dismisses the warning and seeks a logical explanation for the oddities surrounding the dolls.

Although I enjoyed the book, a few issues arose. I grew tired of Catherine's hesitations and was bothered by her going back into the house at the end when she should have known to leave. The finale also left me slightly confused and wanting more clarity on past and present events. Overall, the book scores an 8.5 out of 10. The first half of the book was scarier than the second, as the haunting atmosphere and tension-building were overshadowed by the fast pace and nightmarish events in the latter half. A prequel exploring Violet and M.H. Mason's story would be intriguing. I highly recommend House of Small Shadows for its balance between suspense and fright, and its unexpected ending. This book is an exciting addition to the horror genre, and will undoubtedly capture the attention of those who enjoy spine-chilling stories and unforgettable characters. I'll be on the lookout for future works from this author, as they have demonstrated their ability to immerse readers in a creepy world and keep them on edge until the end.
