I recently enjoyed “The Conspiracy of Suicides” by Petros Márkaris, published by Tusquets Editores. This noir novel bravely tackles the health emergency caused by the coronavirus. The plot follows the new investigation of Commissioner Kostas Charitos, created by Márkaris, and takes place in a Greek context, although it is not limited to it. The author masterfully describes the atmosphere created by the pandemic, as well as the desolation it has generated worldwide for an overly extended period. The work also addresses the measures taken to fight the virus and the unavoidable effects it has had on daily life, social interactions, and the healthcare system.

In this context, the story narrates the suicides of elderly people who, exhausted by the restrictions, choose an extreme form of protest. These suicides are part of a conspiracy that turns out to be an organized movement, and Charitos faces the mystery of who is behind this plot and how future suicides are selected and convinced. Furthermore, the character shows understanding towards those who oppose the vaccine for reasons unrelated to conspiracy theories. The narrative also presents the disillusionment of former communists due to the loss of capacity to mobilize the masses and take to the streets. The story addresses life on the front lines of struggle, in working-class neighborhoods, and in protests, as well as a life of defeats and dissatisfaction. Lambros, a communist, personifies oral memory in this story.

In parallel to “The Conspiracy of Suicides,” “The Fighters of 2021” emerge, whose confrontation differs from the former by the method employed: from suicides to homicides. The tension of the plot is softened by Adriana's culinary talent, Charitos' inseparable wife, with her exquisite homemade dishes. “The Conspiracy of Suicides” addresses the issue of the pandemic and defeat as a matter of survival and power relations. Upon finishing the reading, it is inevitable to be left with a bitter taste in your mouth and to reflect on how to face the situation. In summary, this novel offers an introspective and profound look at the consequences of the pandemic in our lives.

Recientemente he disfrutado de “La Conjura de los Suicidas” de Petros Márkaris, publicado por Tusquets Editores. Esta novela negra aborda con valentía la emergencia sanitaria provocada por el coronavirus. La trama sigue la nueva investigación del comisario Kostas Charitos, creado por Márkaris, y se desarrolla en un contexto griego, aunque no se limita a él. El autor describe de manera magistral el ambiente creado por la pandemia, así como la desolación que ha generado en todo el mundo durante un tiempo demasiado largo. La obra también aborda las medidas adoptadas para combatir el virus y los efectos irremediables que este ha tenido en la vida diaria, en lo social y en el sistema de salud.

En este contexto, se narran los suicidios de ancianos que, agotados por las restricciones, eligen una forma extrema de protesta. En paralelo a la “Conspiración de los Suicidas”, surge “Los Combatientes del 2021”, cuyo enfrentamiento se diferencia del primero por el método empleado: de los suicidios a los homicidios. La tensión de la trama se ve suavizada por el talento culinario de Adriana, la inseparable esposa de Charitos, con sus exquisitos platos caseros. “La Conjura de los Suicidas” aborda el tema de la pandemia y la derrota como una cuestión de supervivencia y relaciones de poder. al concluir la lectura, es inevitable quedarse con un sabor amargo en la boca y reflexionar sobre cómo enfrentar la situación. En resumen, esta novela ofrece una mirada introspectiva y profunda sobre las consecuencias de la pandemia en nuestras vidas.
