The book, titled “Samsón y Nadiezhda” is much more than just a crime novel. Written by Andrej Kurkow, a Ukrainian author born in Russia, and published by Alfaguara, “Samson and Nadjeschda” is a love story, a historical novel, and a crime novel all rolled into one, with carefully crafted characters that readers will love. Kurkow's writing style is reminiscent of Russian classics.

The story takes place in 1919 Kiev during the Russian Revolution, after the Bolsheviks had taken over the city. Samson and his father are caught in the middle of the conflict and are attacked by Red Army soldiers, resulting in Samson losing his ear and his father being killed. Samson finds refuge in his family's former apartment, where he discovers that Red Army soldiers have taken over and are stealing items, including his father's desk. He joins the police force to retrieve his belongings and investigate the soldiers' theft. During the investigation, a murder is uncovered, and Samson finds himself in danger. Along the way, he meets Nadjeschda and falls in love.

Kurkow portrays the complex political and social situation during the chaos of the civil war, where it was unclear who was in control of Kiev at any given moment. He brings the everyday life of 1919 Kiev to life and describes the problems of the city's inhabitants in a compelling and authentic way. The situation of the Ukrainian population then and now, occupied by Russian troops in the eastern provinces, is shown to be similar: life goes on regardless of who governs the city. Kurkow adds a touch of absurdity, such as Samson being able to hear more without his ear and using it as a listening device.

Although the investigation is not the main focus, Samson's investigation frames the novel, while the author portrays the complex political and social situation in Kiev during the civil war. Although the character of Nadjeschda is not fully developed, this first book in a potential series leaves the reader curious for more, as Samson's office is searched while he is away.
