He tenido el placer de leer “Punto de Realce” de Tusquets Editores, la última obra en la saga de la familia Sorci, una distinguida familia de nobles palermitanos. La autora, Simonetta Agnello Hornby, nos envuelve en una narrativa cautivadora que recorre la historia de Sicilia desde el final de la Segunda Guerra Mundial hasta el trágico asesinato de Giovanni Falcone, Francesca Morvillo y sus guardaespaldas el 23 de mayo de 1992. Esta obra es la continuación de “Caffè amaro” y “Piano nobile”, y Hornby, con su característica maestría, prolonga la crónica familiar.

La historia comienza con un asesinato perpetrado por Andrea Sorci en un arranque de ira, seguido por el encubrimiento del crimen por parte de Peppe Vallo, el poderoso abogado e hijo ilegítimo del barón Sorci, también conocido como l'Americano. I have had the pleasure of reading “Punto de Realce” by Tusquets Editores, the latest installment in the saga of the Sorci family, a distinguished family of Palermo nobility. The author, Simonetta Agnello Hornby, envelops us in a captivating narrative that traverses the history of Sicily from the end of World War II to the tragic assassination of Giovanni Falcone, Francesca Morvillo, and their bodyguards on May 23, 1992. This work is a continuation of “Caffè amaro” and “Piano nobile,” with Hornby extending the family chronicle with her characteristic mastery.

The story begins with a murder committed by Andrea Sorci in a fit of rage, followed by the cover-up of the crime by Peppe Vallo, the powerful lawyer and illegitimate son of Baron Sorci, also known as l'Americano. The plot unfolds between 1955 and 1992, encompassing significant events such as student movements, the space race, and events related to the mafia, finance, and politics. At the heart of the narrative is the “Circolo del Punto Pieno,” a female circle where women from different social strata gather to embroider, creating a unique space to “mend” the rifts between the past and the present.

The female characters, including Rita, Mariolina, and the “Three Wise Women,” are portrayed with a depth and richness that elevates them above their male counterparts. Hornby takes us by the hand through the streets and fields of Sicily, allowing us to perceive the aromas and flavors of the island, as well as the texture of the exquisitely embroidered fabrics. “Punto de Realce” is more than a story of betrayals, pains, and misunderstandings; it is an open window to the Sicilian soul, anchored in a noble past that immobilizes the island.
