I had the pleasure of immersing myself in the new edition of Yo fui Johnny Thunders by Salamandra. Beyond the typical tourist image of Barcelona, with its modernist design, Gaudi, and unsuspecting visitors strolling along the Ramblas, there is another side to the city, less known but just as authentic. This is the Barcelona that Carlos Zanon (Barcelona, 1966) portrays with astonishing precision in his work, a real Barcelona inhabited by identifiable characters who struggle to survive their everyday conflicts. The novel presents a raw story about losers, with a protagonist in search of the peace that always eluded him, offering a ruthless tale hidden behind the well-known “sex, drugs and rock'n'roll”.

Close to turning fifty, Francis returns to his family home, the place where he took his first steps in music and where he was called “rock'n'roll boy.” There he confronts the ghosts of his past. His glory days as Mr. Frankie, the talented musician who captivated the audience, are behind him. Despite having achieved his youthful dreams, addiction to drugs trapped him, destroying his ambitions and the lives of those around him. Now, Francis lives with the voice of Mr. Frankie inside him, while the outside world only sees Francis. The duality between the two characters adds great charm to the novel, and Zanon succeeds in complementing the story with equally interesting secondary characters.

Yo fui Johnny Thunders is an unconventional noir novel: although there are no detectives or crimes to solve, there are marginal characters, thieves looking for an opportunity, and addicts trapped in their excesses. With a detailed style and short sentences sprinkled with Catalan words, Zanon constantly incorporates references to current events, such as the independence process and the effects of the economic crisis. All this unfolds to the rhythm of rock'n'roll, with musical references organically integrated into the plot, from The Smiths to Patti Smith, desired by young Francis. The songs that Zanon himself listened to while dreaming of being a rock star are intertwined with the story of Mr. Frankie, creating an exceptional tale of survival, frustration, violence, and second chances.

Tuve el placer de sumergirme en la nueva edición de Salamandra de Yo fui Johnny Thunders. Más allá de la típica imagen turística de Barcelona, con su diseño modernista, Gaudí y visitantes desprevenidos paseando por las Ramblas, existe otra cara de la ciudad, menos conocida pero igual de auténtica. Esta es la Barcelona que Carlos Zanón (Barcelona, 1966) retrata con asombrosa precisión en su obra, una Barcelona real habitada por personajes identificables que luchan por sobrevivir a sus conflictos cotidianos. La novela presenta una historia cruda sobre perdedores, con un protagonista en busca de la paz que siempre eludió, ofreciendo un relato despiadado oculto detrás del conocido “sexo, drogas y rock'n'roll”.

Cerca de cumplir cincuenta años, Francis regresa al hogar familiar, el lugar donde dio sus primeros pasos en la música y donde le apodaban “chico rock'n'roll”. Allí enfrenta los fantasmas de su pasado. Sus días de gloria como Mr. Frankie, el talentoso músico que cautivaba a la audiencia, han quedado atrás. A pesar de haber alcanzado sus sueños juveniles, la adicción a las drogas lo atrapó, destruyendo sus ambiciones y las vidas de quienes lo rodeaban. Las canciones que el propio Zanón escuchaba mientras soñaba con ser una estrella de rock se entrelazan con la historia de Mr. Frankie, creando un relato excepcional sobre supervivencia, frustración, violencia y segundas oportunidades.
