This review contains spoilers from A Darker Shade of Magic.

Four months have passed since the shadow stone fell into Kell's possession. Four months since his path crossed with Delilah Bard. Four months since Rhy was wounded and the Dane twins fell, and the stone was cast with Holland's dying body through the rift, and into Black London.

The main plot will revolve around the Element Games—an extravagant international competition of magic—and a certain pirate ship, carrying old friends back into port. Lila, Rhy, Kell and Alucard, a charming Captain, will be the main characters in this storyline.

But there will be a sub-plot, about what happened in White London after the Twin's death, and what happened to Holland in Black London. And this one was way more interesting than the first, and was what mattered in the end.

The story is addictive (alcohol is also addictive, but it isn't good at all), I couldn't stop reading. But there are some serious issues with the way a certain character was developed, and yes, I'm talking about Lila. She wasn't just reckless and impulsive, she was negligent, erratic, and her choices were always poor. Really, I understand she's not afraid of finding some trouble, but come on, most of the things she did were nonsense, and couldn't possibly work, but it did anyway 🙄

Another thing that bothered me was the few romantic scenes between her and Kell. It didn't feel real, Lila doesn't seem to care about Kell at all most of the time, and even if he is in some way infatuated with her, the way they acted wasn't credible.

Once more, I still liked the book a little, but it wasn't better than ADSOM, it just had more pages. But that ending saved the story. The book ended in a huge cliff-hanger, so you better have ACOL with you when you read this one.

Have you read this book? I would love to read your opinions 😄
