ENGLISH REVIEW
“The Family Upstairs” by Lisa Jewell, published by Crossbooks, has quickly become one of my favorite reads this year. I've enjoyed several of her other books, but this one stands out as the best. I found myself captivated by the complex and tangled plot, reading most of the book in the afternoon and finishing it before bed. The story stayed with me, keeping me awake for at least an hour as I tried to process everything that had happened.

The novel features three main voices: Lucy, a homeless mother of two; Henry, the son of a wealthy couple who fell victim to a scam; and Libby, a 25-year-old girl who inherits a house from her biological parents who committed suicide nearly a year after her birth. As the stories unfold, the connections between the three protagonists begin to reveal themselves. However, Jewell masterfully handles the mystery, causing readers to question what they think they know. In this intricate web of characters, Libby is a sweet girl in search of the truth, Henry is eccentric and possibly unstable, and Lucy's circumstances result from bad luck or her own choices.

As the story progresses, the characters' pasts and motivations become clearer. Lucy's actions stem from her childhood experiences, and while she may deserve some consequences for her actions, she has undoubtedly suffered greatly. Libby is an entirely relatable character, the kind of person one would want to befriend. Henry's character is more complex, with moments of charm contrasted by situations where he appears dangerous. Questions about his responsibility, the extent of his punishment, and the authenticity of his account remain.

“The Family Upstairs” leaves readers with a sense of intrigue and some room for interpretation. Jewell provides a defined ending, but there are still doubts about which version of the truth to believe. The dark and deceptive relationships between the characters create a perfectly complex family drama that captivated me. There are some minor details that left me questioning, such as Julian's whereabouts and the circumstances surrounding the murders. However, these concerns were inconsequential to the overall story, and I eagerly look forward to reading more of Jewell's novels in the future.
