DAMN, IT WAS GOOD!

This book made me suffer at the beginning, 200 pages of worldbuilding, presenting the many characters, and nothing happened at all! And then I started to connect with the characters, through their past I started to understand why they acted the way they acted, or at least some of them.
Only when I was halfway through the story, I started to grasp the plot, and I took me even longer to see the big picture as a hole. And I'm sure I've barely scratched the surface.

Let me start with the story setting. It's centered in the Agriont, the palace and seat of government of the Union, inside the city of Adua, mainly. Though some of the events in this book occur in other places such as Gurhkul in the south, Angland and the Northlands. Other places are just named, like the Old Empire and the Thousand Islands.
It's an ambitious and complex world indeed.

The main characters are Bayaz, first of the Magi, an ancient Wizard, seemingly immortal. Logen, also called Ninefingers and the bloody-nine, a northerner who used to be Bethod's (King of the North) champion. Luthar, a young nobleman, soldier of the King's Own, fencer, pretty vain and arrogant, but innocent. And Ferro, an escaped slave of the Gurkish Empire.
Their paths cross at some point in the story, and that's when the real action begins!
